After a brief hiatus
we're back to writing journals.
Today I will be discussing
my field work in the B1 trunk rooms. Let me take a step back. I was
recently tasked to reorganize the trunk rooms. B1 has two of them, one
is in the basement and the other is in the subbasement. Basically, I
was told that all the firsties and cows must be in the basement and
all the yuks and the plebes must be in the subbasement. In addition
to that, I need to make a key control book for the lockers that had
keys and have everyone who has items that are not in a locker send their
stuff home and chain items like skis to posts in the trunk rooms.
Upon hearing the task
I already knew there would be many issues that would arise, but kept
an open mind until I scoped out the situation. That is what I did this
morning. Armed with a sketch pad, masking tape, and some Grant hall
coffee I surveyed the situation. I began in the basement. The basement
is smaller than the subbasement. It currently houses 55 lockers and
with space to have a fold up table and some miscellaneous bags thrown
onto palettes. Prior to this year, most firsites and cows were evicted
from the room so that the incoming yuks and plebes could move in. For
the most part this is still the case. There are 7 '03 lockers (2 doubled),
4 '04, 24 '05 (1 doubled), 15 '06 (7 doubled, 1 tripled), 3 empty, and
2 unknown. After labeling and noting all the ones that required keys
I moved on.
The subbasement is
considerably larger than the basement. There are currently75 lockers,
with 2 racks for trunks/bags, some empty space along a wall and a folding
table. There are 13 unbuilt lockers in here as well. The remaining stats
are: 20 '03 lockers, 23 '04, 4 '05, 7 '06, 6 empty, and 14 unknown.
There are 130 lockers
total with 13 more that could be built and one that's needed to store
paint and spirit supplies. The company has 123 cadets assigned to it,
28 '03, 28 '04, 34 '05, and 33 '06. The firsties and plebes will be
moving out at the end of this year and the cows will become firsties,
the yuks cows, and new rising yuks will move in. Next year there will
be approximately 62 cows and firsties and 67 plebes and yuks.
My initial proposal was to move the current cows and yuks into the basement
and have the plebes and the firsties in the subbasement, that way only
two classes really have to move as opposed to a whole company and the
system is set up for the next year. Regardless of what plan happens,
there will be (given no one leaves and everyone wants a locker) 62 people
next year who need to be in the basement trunk room that currently holds
55 lockers. If all 13 unbuilt lockers were constructed and somehow fit
into the basement there would be 68 available lockers. Based on the
number of plebes and yuks now, there would 67 people in a locker room
that has 75 lockers and has greater potential to store more of the unbuilt
lockers if they were built. Take away one for spirit supplies and that
leaves 7 empty lockers. In the predicted figures, there will be 129
people assigned to the company. 130 lockers minus 129 people, leaves
one locker for spirit stuff. The fact that everyone must move their
trunks, refrigerators and rugs into the trunk rooms at the end of each
semester must also be taken into account, although there is also the
storage room that I have not looked into yet.
I criticize the realism
of this task. While it would be nice to have the classes in their respective
trunk rooms I do not think that it could realistically be employed.
